AAC Language Lab

Stages, lesson plans, activities, and Smart Charts. Use the Lab to pick core words and print a path — then model on HIS TouchChat. Do not copy a lesson’s extra words onto his live file.

The how-to is written in this lesson so you can train here. Official page: AAC Language Lab

  • AAC Language Lab is PRC-Saltillo. About $19.95/year on the PRC account. Stages, lessons, Skill Survey, online Language Screener, Smart Charts.
  • A Smart Chart is the icon path for a target word in a named language system and grid. Print it for the aide. That is how staff find WANT without opening Edit.
  • My Lab (subscription) stores up to 25 custom Smart Charts, 25 target words each. Color by part of speech if it helps motor planning — do not move buttons on HIS file to match a chart.
  • Lesson plans and activities exist by language stage. Use them to pick functions and core, then model on HIS TouchChat. Do not copy a lesson’s fringe onto his file without Brittany + AbleNet.

Language stages

Pick activities that match where he is. Stages overlap. They are a teaching map, not a gate.

StageFocusIn this classroom
1Single wordsDirect, request, label. GO STOP MORE LIKE LOOK WANT HELP.
2Two- and three-word phrasesCombine core: WANT THAT, NOT MORE, HELP ME.
3Early sentencesWord order, -ing, plural -s. Still model core on his file.
4Grammar and questionsNegatives, questions, irregular past. Smart Charts help staff find the path.
5More endingsPossessives, he/she -s, regular -ed.
6Complex sentencesLonger grammar. Vocabulary keeps growing. Core does not move.

How to pull a Smart Chart

Do this on a staff computer. Print it for the aide. Never install extra apps on the QuickTalker to “make charts easier.”

  1. 1

Open AAC Language Lab on a staff computer — not on Trevor’s QuickTalker.

  2. 2

Choose language system WordPower and the grid already on HIS device.

  3. 3

Open the Smart Chart for the target word. Print it. That is the icon path.

  4. 4

Give the print to the aide. They tap that path on HIS device. They do not open Edit.

  5. 5

My Lab (subscription, ~$19.95/year on the PRC account) stores up to 25 custom charts, 25 words each. Color by part of speech if it helps motor planning.

  6. 6

Do not move buttons on HIS file to match a chart. The chart follows the file, not the other way around.

  7. 7

Lesson fringe (Earth Day, Same and Different, etc.) goes on the request list to Brittany + AbleNet. Core is modeled today.

Ready-to-run Lab activities (Ready, Set, Go; Play That Music; I Do Not; Moon Sand) are written out in Handouts & activities.

Realize Language (optional, SLP)

Realize Language can chart logged use after the family signs consent. It is not part of opening the device, and minutes in a bag are not models. Leave it off unless the SLP and family have already agreed.
