Handouts and activities

Free AbleTeams printables, AbleExperience everyday activities, core-word calendars, and AAC Language Lab lessons — with the how-to written here. Open the official page for the PDF. Run every activity on HIS TouchChat. Do not program a new board for the worksheet.

Everyday classroom habits

Core word of the week

Pick one homepage word (LOOK, LIKE, MORE, STOP, GO). Model it in morning meeting, a read-aloud, and one academic block. Same word, same button, all week so the motor plan sticks.

Question of the day

Put the question on HIS TouchChat, not only on a whiteboard. Ask once. Wait ten seconds. Honor a button, look, vocal, or head shake as the answer.

Low-tech core board

GO at the door. A full board at circle. The board is a backup and a teaching tool — it does not replace the QuickTalker.

Home base

One obvious spot the device returns to between blocks. Charging happens when he is not in instruction — not during the lesson.

Circle time / morning meeting

HELLO LOOK LIKE GO

  1. 1

Device out before the first greeting. Question of the day lives on HIS homepage.

  2. 2

Model LOOK / LIKE / GO while you talk. One or two hits — not a full sentence hunt.

  3. 3

Wait ten seconds after the question. Honor the first real attempt.

  4. 4

Peers wait with you. That is the social lesson.

AbleTeams · Aide + receiving adult · Every move

Transitions in the hall

WAIT GO STOP FINISHED

  1. 1

The QuickTalker travels. Do not start the line without it.

  2. 2

Model WAIT, then GO. Model FINISHED at the door you are leaving.

  3. 3

If a specials teacher is ready and the device is still on the life-skills desk, the aide brings it. That is the job.

AbleTeams + SaltilloBrand · Anyone teaching ELA · During the book

Shared reading / read-aloud

LOOK THAT LIKE MORE NOT

  1. 1

Model during the page, not after the book is closed.

  2. 2

LOOK / THAT / LIKE / MORE / NOT are enough for a whole story.

  3. 3

If he hits STOP, honor it. You can finish later.

  4. 4

SaltilloBrand / PRC-Saltillo WordPower Wednesday videos are extra modeling practice — watch them on staff time.

AbleTeams · Teacher · peers · 15–20

All About My Friend

WHO LIKE LOOK YOU ME

  1. 1

He chooses a photo or classmate (or a book character).

  2. 2

You model questions on HIS TouchChat: WHO is this? What do they LIKE? LOOK.

  3. 3

Answer as if you know the person, so he has something to follow up on.

  4. 4

Take turns. Celebrate every question — that is commenting and asking, not requesting a snack.

  5. 5

Keep it two-way. He asks, you answer, he comments.

AbleTeams · Whole team · All week

Back-to-School AAC Challenge

Any homepage core

  1. 1

Each hour, check the box only if the device was present AND an adult modeled on it.

  2. 2

Present but silent does not count. Modeled but in a bag does not count.

  3. 3

Optional: a light team prize for the most honest hours — not for forcing hits.

  4. 4

This is the same idea as the practice log in this guide.

AbleTeams · Teacher · SLP · Plan on Friday, use all week

Core words grab-and-go / calendar

Weekly core

  1. 1

Use the packet and calendar for ideas — then model those words on HIS WordPower, not on a different board.

  2. 2

Do not add a calendar word to his file yourself. If it is missing, Word Finder first; then a request to family and AbleNet.

AbleTeams · Everyone · As needed

AAC troubleshooting tips

—

  1. 1

Volume, sleep, and a dark screen are the usual classroom snags — not a reason to switch apps.

  2. 2

If the speech app is missing, stop. Call AbleNet. Do not install another voice.

  3. 3

If you cannot find a word, use Word Finder. Gray Find means it is not in the file.

  4. 4

Do not factory-reset, Clear Log, or turn Guided Access off to ‘fix’ it.

AbleTeams · Everyone · 5 to reread

Modeling do’s and don’ts

1–2 core hits

  1. 1

Do: talk naturally, hit 1–2 key words on HIS screen, wait, honor.

  2. 2

Don’t: quiz, hand-over-hand to ‘make him talk,’ or wait for a perfect sentence.

  3. 3

The popsicle script in this guide is the campus version of this handout.

AbleTeams · Everyone · 10 to reread

Core vs fringe (why home stays put)

OPEN GO WANT MORE HELP

  1. 1

Core (~80%): GO, WANT, MORE, STOP, HELP, OPEN, LIKE, YOU — home page, every activity.

  2. 2

Fringe (~20%): specific nouns. AbleNet already built both into WordPower. You do not swap core off the home page to make room for a worksheet word.

  3. 3

OPEN works for a lunchbox, a package, and a door. That is why you model OPEN instead of adding three nouns.

  4. 4

Print the core-vs-fringe cheat sheet from the official page. Practice on a printed board.

AbleTeams · Everyone · Once, then daily

Core boards packet (print practice)

Homepage core

  1. 1

Print the AbleTeams core boards for staff practice and a door / circle backup.

  2. 2

The printed board is a teaching tool. It does not replace the QuickTalker and it is not his WordPower coordinates.

  3. 3

GO at the door. Full board at circle. Model the same words you would hit on HIS screen.

  4. 4

Do not invent a different layout. Word requests still go to family + AbleNet.

AbleTeams · Teacher · SLP · aide · End of each block

Quick tips for data collection

In reach · modeled · waited

  1. 1

AbleTeams data tips, campus version: log adult behavior, not whether he ‘performed.’

  2. 2

Each block: Was the device in reach? Did an adult model? Did you wait ten seconds?

  3. 3

Present but silent does not count. Modeled but in a bag does not count.

  4. 4

Use the practice log in this course. Do not treat Realize minutes as proof of modeling.

AbleTeams · Teacher + aide · Center rotation

Centers and stations lesson plan

WANT MORE STOP HELP OPEN

  1. 1

Print the AbleTeams centers plan. Run it on HIS TouchChat — do not build a station-specific board.

  2. 2

Device travels with the bin. Model WANT / MORE / STOP / HELP / OPEN while the activity is happening.

  3. 3

Honor STOP. Do not hand-over-hand a product for the bulletin board.

  4. 4

If a center word is missing, Word Finder first, then a request. Core does the work today.

AbleTeams · Teacher + aide · 5–10

End-of-day reflection

LIKE NOT FINISHED GO

  1. 1

AbleTeams end-of-day plan: he comments on the day on HIS homepage — LIKE / NOT / FINISHED.

  2. 2

Model one comment yourself first. Wait ten seconds. Honor a button, look, or vocal.

  3. 3

FINISHED and GO as you pack. Charge overnight. No silent edits after the bell.

  4. 4

Print the lesson plan. Do not add a ‘reflection page’ to his live file.

AbleTeams · Centers · SLP · 10–15

Toy companion

WANT MORE STOP LIKE GO HELP

  1. 1

Any preferred toy. Model core on HIS TouchChat while you play — not a button for each toy name.

  2. 2

GO to start, STOP, MORE, LIKE, HELP if it jams. Honor NOT.

  3. 3

Print the toy companion. Practice the script on a printed board if you need to, then use HIS file.

Everyday activities (AbleExperience)

AbleExperience · Anyone teaching a read-aloud · During the book

Take a look — it’s in a book

LOOK THAT LIKE MORE NOT

  1. 1

AbleNet’s Eat, Play, Read activity. Run it on HIS TouchChat — do not add book characters as new buttons.

  2. 2

LOOK / THAT on the picture. LIKE or NOT as a comment. MORE to keep reading.

  3. 3

Turn-taking: you hit the word, then wait ten seconds for his turn. Honor STOP.

  4. 4

After the story, the real conversation stays on WordPower — Pictello can preview, it cannot replace the voice.

AbleExperience · Aide · teacher at lunch · Meal

Snack / lunch comments — not just WANT

WANT MORE STOP HELP LIKE NOT DRINK

  1. 1

AbleNet mealtime activity, classroom version. Offer a real choice. Model WANT / THAT. Wait.

  2. 2

HELP for packages. LIKE / NOT / STOP as comments and protest — honor NOT.

  3. 3

Do not add snack photos to his file. Use homepage core. Write a request if a needed word is missing.

AbleExperience · Music · centers · 10–15

Play DJ

LIKE MORE STOP NOT PLAY

  1. 1

He comments on the song. You model LIKE / MORE / STOP / NOT on HIS TouchChat as you press play on the speaker.

  2. 2

Protest is valid. If he hits NOT or STOP, change the song.

  3. 3

Do not program a button for each title. Core does the work.

AbleExperience · Centers · peers · 15

Game on — my turn / your turn

GO STOP MORE YOU ME LIKE

  1. 1

Any simple game. Model GO to start, STOP, MORE, and turn-taking with YOU / ME if those are on his home.

  2. 2

Comment when someone wins: LIKE. Wait ten seconds on his turn.

  3. 3

Peers copy the adult. That is the social lesson.

AbleExperience · PE · aide · The period

PE / playground — AAC adventures

GO STOP MORE HELP LIKE

  1. 1

AbleNet park activity, school version. Device travels. Home-base at the edge of the activity.

  2. 2

Model GO / STOP / MORE / HELP / LIKE while he is moving — not after you sit down.

  3. 3

Preferences and protests count. Do not leave the QuickTalker in the classroom because PE is ‘movement.’

AbleExperience · Anyone · share with home · Everyday routines

Family practice ideas (staff can run these too)

Homepage core

  1. 1

AbleNet family activities: everyday routines, grocery-style choice, park, meals, reading.

  2. 2

School version: same core words, HIS file, ten-second wait. Do not program a special ‘home vocabulary.’

  3. 3

Send the official page home if the family wants the original write-up.

AbleExperience · Centers · teacher · aide · 15–20

Classroom store / grocery adventure

WANT THAT MORE HELP LIKE NOT OPEN

  1. 1

AbleNet grocery activity, classroom version: a shelf or bin of real snacks / art supplies is the ‘store.’

  2. 2

Plan: he chooses WHAT he wants from the shelf using WANT / THAT on HIS TouchChat — not a paper list of new nouns.

  3. 3

If it is out of reach: model HELP. Honor NOT if he refuses an item.

  4. 4

At ‘checkout’: LIKE / MORE / OPEN for the package. You do not add brand names to the file.

  5. 5

Social layer: greet the cashier-peer. Core does the work. Official page has the community version for families.

Core words (for SLPs and the classroom)

For SLPs · Teacher · SLP · whole team · Plan Friday, use all week

Core word of the month

One homepage core, all month

  1. 1

AbleNet core-words calendar: introduce the word on HIS device, pick an activity, review it in more than one block.

  2. 2

January example from AbleNet: GO — cars, places we go, Go, Dog. Go, ‘where do you want to GO?’

  3. 3

Same process every month. The button does not move. You do not add a calendar fringe word yourself.

  4. 4

Download the PDF from the official page and share it with the team.

For SLPs · Teacher · SLP · A week each

Teaching GO, WANT, EAT

GO WANT EAT

  1. 1

AbleNet sequence: introduce the word, show it on HIS homepage, use it in real activities, review.

  2. 2

GO: cars, lining up, books about going. WANT: choices and scavenger hunts. EAT: snack and lunch comments.

  3. 3

Model the word. Wait. Honor. Do not quiz him into hitting it.

For SLPs · Teacher · SLP · specials · Once, then daily

Low-tech core board posters

Homepage core

  1. 1

AbleNet: a poster that matches the home page helps peers and staff model when hands are full (PE, circle).

  2. 2

Print a board that mirrors HIS WordPower home — PRC core boards for TouchChat. Symbol Overlay Maker can print paper overlays.

  3. 3

The poster is a backup. It does not replace the QuickTalker. Do not invent a different layout.

AAC Language Lab — use the activity, keep his file

AAC Language Lab · Stage 1 · Teacher · SLP · 15

Ready, Set, Go

GO STOP MORE

  1. 1

Stage 1: single core words. Objective: he uses GO / STOP / MORE in a real movement game.

  2. 2

Speaking: swing, walker, hallway — model GO to start, STOP to pause, MORE to continue.

  3. 3

Reading: if you use the Lab book, model the red starter words as they appear.

  4. 4

Do the real game on HIS TouchChat. Do not copy extra fringe onto the live file.

AAC Language Lab · Stage 1 · Teacher · music · SLP · 15

Play That Music

PLAY STOP MORE LIKE

  1. 1

Requests with core: PLAY to start the song, STOP to pause, MORE for another, LIKE to comment.

  2. 2

You hit the word as you press play on the speaker — same moment, same meaning.

  3. 3

Writing extension (Lab): he can later save a line in WordPower Stories and Scripts — family + AbleNet if anything is added to the file.

AAC Language Lab · Teacher · SLP · 20

What Do They Do?

Action core (GO LOOK HELP …)

  1. 1

Directing and requesting during favorite activities. Model the action word, then act it out.

  2. 2

Guessing game: draw an action card, act it, he finds the word on HIS device.

  3. 3

Reading: model target words the first time through; second time he hunts them.

  4. 4

Skip any Lab step that asks you to edit his vocabulary.

AAC Language Lab · Stage 1 · Teacher · SLP · 15

Same and Different

THAT LIKE NOT LOOK

  1. 1

Single words to compare objects: LOOK, THAT, LIKE, NOT.

  2. 2

Two objects on the table. You model. He comments. Honor NOT.

  3. 3

Pull the Lab plan for printables; run the language on HIS WordPower.

AAC Language Lab · Stage 1 · Everyone · 10

I Do Not

NOT STOP

  1. 1

Negatives are language. Model NOT and STOP when he is actually refusing.

  2. 2

Honor the protest. Do not override it and then count a ‘successful request.’

AAC Language Lab · all levels · Centers · SLP · Center rotation

Moon Sand

MORE OPEN HELP STOP LIKE

  1. 1

Sensory play is a language activity if the device is in reach.

  2. 2

Model MORE / OPEN / HELP / STOP / LIKE while hands are in the bin.

  3. 3

Wipe the case. Do not park the device ‘because sand.’

AAC Language Lab · Stage 4 · SLP · teacher when ready · Lesson block

Earth Day lesson (Stage 4 sample)

Per Smart Chart

  1. 1

Stage 4 adds grammar and longer utterances. Use it when the team is there — not as a reason to skip Stage 1 core.

  2. 2

Open the Lab plan, print the Smart Chart for the aide, model on HIS file.

  3. 3

Do not move buttons to match a chart.
